Huntingburg Community Placemaking Projects
Taylor Siefker Williams Design Group worked with the City of Huntingburg on a variety of community placemaking projects as a result of their Stellar Communities Designation. As part of this initial program, TSWDG assisted in the preparation of the Strategic Investment Plan that identified a series of community initiatives, including the creation of Market Street Park, the 4th Street Heritage Trail and Community Gateway projects.
TSWDG was responsible for the preparation of the conceptual design and urban design work for several assignments that enhanced the quality of place for the City. Project highlights included the creation of Market Street Park that has passive open space, a variety of “flex” plaza spaces, and a central gathering and performance area. The park features a signature double-sided performance area with a lawn terrace and plaza adjacent to the Fourth Street Heritage Trail. This portion of the Heritage Trail through the historic downtown allows for local businesses the option of utilizing the parallel parking spaces on the street as outdoor seating or event space by ‘flexing’ the space – closing off parking areas via and bollard and fence system and adding moveable tables and chairs. The surface treatment is a curbless scenario, where all paving (pedestrian and vehicular spaces) is at the same level. Material options for lighting, surface paving and pedestrian amenities were also intended to reflect the historic nature of the downtown business district and complement the context of the corridor.
TSWDG also led the creation of a community Gateway and Signage Master Plan for the city. This study is a representation of how Huntingburg can implement a citywide, wayfinding signage system including directional, identification, and gateway signage. The client packet includes written policy for signage, detailed drawings and graphics of all direction and identification signage, concept-level graphics for new, prototypical City gateway signage designs.
